Las Vegas Marathon - Dec 7th

Though I work out a few times a week, it's been > 4 years since I've ran 5 miles or better. My typical runs vary between 1.5 - 3 miles - mostly used as a warmup prior to weight lifting.

Anyway, one of the folks at work informed me that he was planning to run the 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles) but his partner broke her toe and wouldn't be making it. He then asked if I was interested - that was three days ago.

To make a long-story short, I woke up at 4 am today and was running down the LAS VEGAS STRIP with > 10,000 other folks at 6am. (see route below)

Las Vegas Marathon - Note: the first 6 miles were a blast; after that, painful!

Closing:

I've never done one of these before, but I made it through the entire 13.1 mile, grueling (for me anyway) route. A speed demon I was not... Finishing time was 2hrs and 20 mins. That's about a 10.5 minute mile throughout the course.

Presently, I'm in agony and my plan for the day is to lay completely still and OD on Tylenol!

It was brutal, but I now have bragging rights: I did it and didn't even train first -though I'm certain to pay for this lack of training over the next few days.

Congrats Randy

I too was running in that race at 6 am. I actually did my 1st full marathon today and share your pain, the final 10-11 miles was brutally painful. Final time was 4 hrs 57 mins!

That's super Tim! There is no way I could have made the full 26... As it stands now, I can barely climb the stairs of my house.

Big Congrats on you achievement!

Randy,

Tylenol is brutal on the liver, and is/was illegal in many countries, until that became a crime against globalization.

congratulations Randy! nothing like shear physical exhaustion to give you perspective

The best thing without fail is to always schedule a massage for your legs. Always. No matter what kind of shape you are in. Then you will feel no pain. It is amazing.

Randy,

Awesome job. Drink plenty of water. Stretch. Roll out if you can.

Cheers,

PDM

Really appreciate the support everyone... feel a little better today - basically just my knees aching now. Anyway, I slept through most of yesterday - fighting the chills a few times.

Again, thanks for the advice/support

just a minor grammar check here:

run (present tense)
ran (past tense)
have run (past participle)

You're still a great guy, and I love your blog; carry on.

=)

That kind of physical exhaustion lets you know you are alive doesn't it? I don't do near as much hunting as I use to do but when I really get after it now it is absolutely brutal. Depending of course on what I'm hunting. But climbing lots of hills or pulling up deer stands 30 feet in the air and barely hanging on a tree while hanging it is brutal on me these days. My job which I'm laid off from was very inactive physically and I've never been much on exercise so you no where that leads.

Well said Dave. You are one of my favorite guys Randy and I've never even met you face to face. Thanks for your genuine effort and complimentary disposition. You are truly a great guy to know.

Sincerely,

David,

I certainly never claimed to be an English major (BTW: Telecom and Engineering) and I'm by no means the sharpest knife in the drawer - so I appreciate your (probably futile) effort in trying to keep my sloppy grammar straight.

Appreciate your readership!

Justin, certainly does... I'm just glad I didn't have a coronary!

With that, I'm very humbled with your gracious comment (above), your readership and contributions to this endeavor - opening eyes.

Regards

Randy
